Los Angeles – David Fincher’s black and white drama “Mank” about the creation of the Hollywood classic “Citizen Kane” is the clear favorite at the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25th. The film with Gary Oldman in the lead role of the eponymous screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz received ten nominations from the Academy, as announced on Monday. The other competitors are crowded behind it.

Chloé Zhao’s Golden Globe winner “Nomadland” goes into the cinematic Night of Nights with six chances to win, as does “Minari” by Lee Isaac Chung or “The Father” by Florian Zeller. The deaf drama “Sound of Metal”, Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Judas and the Black Messiah” by Shaka King about the Black Panther movement in the 1960s also received six nominations. All of these works are also nominated in the king’s category for best film. This round is only completed by Emerald Fennell’s revenge satire “Promising Young Woman”, which has received five nominations.

This also includes the one for the best direction, whereby Fennell has to compete with “Mank” maker David Fincher, Lee Isaac Chung for “Minari”, Chloè Zhao (“Nomadland”) and the Danish director Thomas Vinterberg. With his successful work “Der Rausch” with Mads Mikkelsen, Vinterberg is also in the running for the best foreign film category.

Austrian co-production in the running for overseas Oscar

Here the work matches, among other things, with an Austrian co-production, Jasmila Zbanic’s war drama “Quo vadis, Aida?”. However, the film was not submitted by Austria, but by Bosnia and Herzegovina. A little red-white-red thumb holding is still possible. This section is completed by “Better Days” (Hong Kong), “Collective” (Romania) and “The Man Who Sold His Skin” (Tunisia).

In the case of the male leading actors, the field of nominations also focuses on the round of favorite films. For the men, Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), the late Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), Gary Oldman (“Mank”) and Steven Yeun (“Minari”) ) against each other. In the case of women, on the other hand, actresses who have appeared in films other than those from the circle of “Mank” followers also have a chance. The gang of five here consists of Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Andra Day (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”), Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”), Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) and Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”).

Nothing came of it with a nomination for the twelve-year-old German actress Helena Zengel, who can be seen in “News of the World” alongside Hollywood star Tom Hanks. In the supporting actresses, Maria Bakalova (“Borat 2”), Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”) and Yuh-Jung Youn (“Minari”) Give hope. Her male counterparts are Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”), Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Leslie Odom Jr. (“One Night in Miami …”), Paul Raci (” Sound of Metal) and Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”).

The announcement of the nominations also paints a picture of the past film year, which – how could it be otherwise – was shaped by the coronavirus and, as a result, largely closed cinemas. In many cases, the start dates of large productions have been postponed or published on streaming platforms. This area is correspondingly well represented when, for example, Netflix has a total of 35 nominations and, according to Reuters, leads the studios. Disney brought it to 15 mentions, Amazon Studios achieved the best result for the company with twelve nominations. A little more than a month will show who will ultimately be able to take home the most prizes. (APA)
