Vienna – With the Tipo generation currently on offer, Fiat has done very well in the past four years: The Italians sold around 670,000 units of the three body variants – five-door, sedan and station wagon – worldwide. Now a revision is pending, which brings numerous innovations and interestingly also a fourth body variant: a crossover. It stands out, for example, from the standard five-door model with more ground clearance (plus four centimeters), and the roof line is seven centimeters higher. Instead, there is a higher seating position, making it easier to get in and out of the car. Other features of the Tipo Cross are plastic paneling along the wheel arches and the side skirts, a suggested underrun protection, widened fenders and striking bumpers. Fiat installs a roof rail ex works (as is usually the case with the station wagon).

The Tipo Cross accompanies an impressive modernization of the rest of the Tipo fleet, which can be seen both outside and inside: the radiator grille of the three body variants offered so far has changed, plus there is an adapted logo and new lettering. Changes also affect the design of the front headlights and the arrangement of the rear lights. Fiat emphasizes the use of full-LED headlights, which increase passive and active driving safety, as the headlight range and luminosity are better than before. The new technology also consumes less energy than the previously used lighting system.

Inside, a digital set of instruments (with a seven-inch display) replaces the previously used analog instruments. The screen is freely configurable. In addition, a 10.25-inch touchscreen sits enthroned on the center console, designed for the Uconnect 5 infotainment system. Further modifications in the interior relate to easier operation of the air conditioning, a more compact design of the steering wheel and additional chrome elements.

The modernization of the engine portfolio also deserves attention: With the planned market launch in the next few weeks, a gasoline engine and two turbodiesels should be ready. The gasoline engine is a one-liter, three-cylinder turbo from the FireFly family of units from Fiat, which delivers 100 hp and develops a maximum torque of 190 Newton meters from 1500 tours – for comparison: the replaced 1.4-liter four-cylinder -Benziner achieved a torque of 128 Nm from 4500 revolutions / minute.

The diesels have a 1.3-liter diesel with 95 hp and a 1.6-liter oil burner with 130 hp. The top diesel emits 114 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. Prices for the renewed Tipo have not yet been determined, they will probably be submitted in the coming month. (panty)
