Why you should visit the capital of Jamaica

The capital of Jamaica is Kingston and it is the largest city on the island. It is located on the southeast coast of the island and its natural harbor is protected by a long sand spit known as the Palisadoes.

The capital actually has two airports, the main one is Norman Manley International, where all flights from all over the world arrive. While the smaller airport called Tinson Pen Aerodrome is the one that deals mainly with domestic flights (ie those arriving from other Caribbean islands).

The city of Kingston did not actually exist until 1692 and this was solely because the Port Royal area was destroyed by a major earthquake founded at that time. In fact, prior to this earthquake, the area that is now Kingston was used solely for agricultural purposes.

However, it was another 11 years after the earthquake that struck Port Royal that the city of Kingston began to flourish. At this time, a surveyor named John Goffe decided to draw up plans for the city that were based on a grid. He then took another 13 years from 1703 to 1716 for the city to become the largest in Jamaica. Due to its growth, it also became the center of trade that occurred on the island.

When construction began, people were only allowed to buy the same amount of land they originally owned when they lived in Port Royal and only that which was situated on the waterfront. But gradually, the city’s merchants grew richer and began buying up land further inland so they could build new houses instead of living on top of their places of business.
