Leopard Gecko Character Traits

Observing geckos, you quickly realize that they are very fascinating creatures and can give you hours of visual enjoyment.

Leopard geckos are opportunistic hunters and do not forage for food. But if your prey wanders into view, watch out! Geckos rarely lose their prey. If your gecko is hungry and sees its prey, it will begin to stalk it very slowly and deliberately like a leopard would stalk its prey in the wild. They will become very attentive and fix their gaze on the prey. Once the gecko has them within striking distance, a few surprising flicks of his fat tail and a lunge and it’s over. The gecko will lick his lips in satisfaction and go off to his favorite spot in his enclosure until the next time.

Geckos have great personalities and are very easy to get along with and rarely try to bite unless they are mistreated or surprised. Each gecko has its own uniqueness and they are very beautiful. But not very elegant at times, to the point of being hilarious. I have seen my male look over a ledge in his cage and fall and land on his head, then get up and run away as if something had attacked him. My male loves superworms, while my female is afraid of them and only eats the smaller mealworms. I have noticed that they both look at me outside their cages wanting to go out for a walk, “under my strict supervision, of course”. They will both make search patterns in their cages to see if anything has changed or if predators are nearby. I’ve seen them both rip their asses apart when I’ve gotten up from the couch and they’ve seen the move.

In the wild, male leopard geckos are very solitary lizards and will try to kill other males that enter their territory. That is why two males are never housed together, they prefer to live alone. Females will tolerate the company of others, but a certain amount of bullying will ensue which will cause stress. In general, each leopard gecko has its own little personality trait, and one thing they all have in common is that they are entertaining to watch. In my personal opinion that is what makes them one of the most sought after reptiles on the planet.
