Back to school frenzy or freedom?

Back to school frenzy or freedom?

It’s time to go back to school. This didn’t mean much to me when I didn’t have kids or my kids weren’t in school yet. Our oldest son starts school tomorrow. I must admit that I am sad for the same reasons that any other mother is sad when her first child goes to school. But what does this mean for my business?

I remember thinking… when my kids are in school I’ll have all the time in the world to work on my business. I compared children in school to the freedom of working in my business. While that might be true, he didn’t seem to have the full picture of more children following the first. So, with my first school start, we still have a toddler who is walking and learning to talk. So I’m not really home free yet.

I can’t work on my business at a future time. I need to work on my business on today’s schedule. I also didn’t consider when school starts, a whole different world starts. School activities like PTA, conferences, volunteering, sports and the list goes on.

  • This is what I see very clearly the night before my children’s first day of school (sniffle sniffle).
  • Never leave for today what you need to do in your business to move forward.
  • Time will fly by and before you know it, my kids will be graduating high school (sniffle, sniffle).
  • Time is always being consumed by something, so take the time to work on your business and do it.
  • Don’t lose sight of the prize because there will always be something trying to steal that spotlight.
  • Enjoy every moment of every day because it can change instantly.

As our families’ schedules change, so does mine as a homemaker. My schedule adapts to your schedules. I plan how many hours I will work during the week and what I need to do. Then when it’s time to work, I work. I don’t do laundry, I don’t do the dishes, I don’t clean the house, I don’t watch TV, I don’t fill in the blank. Job.

I’m still not perfect by any means. Your progress is not perfection and I have come a long way! Managing my time and being disciplined are key here. After taking the pictures of the first day of school, kiss my son goodbye, cry a little, and then go to work. I have some amazing goals for the next two years and they will require daily action. They could even take massive daily action.

What I can say with certainty is that I am the luckiest mother in the world because I can see my son off for school and not have to ask a boss for the day off. How cool is that!
