Mayrhofen – The young people in Mayrhofen know what they want: a youth center. But they don’t want anything by halves, they want a fixed place where they can meet, have fun and talk about anything. For Elisa, Johanna and Mariella it is high time that the youth room “Chill” in Widum was revived. They want someone to talk to about worries and problems. Luis is hoping for a “chilled” place where you can make new contacts and change something.

The new youth worker Elisabeth Schneidinger takes these concerns to heart. She has recently started working in the village, but already has big plans. The biggest challenge for them at the moment is getting to know the young people and building trust. “This will need time. So far it was hardly possible due to the strict Corona measures, “she says. There have been easing since Monday and the 31-year-old’s plans are picking up speed. She has started networking with clubs and schools and wants to work closely with them.

Schneidinger is also planning activities such as collecting rubbish, helping each other with homework or teaching young people how to critically question information and how to use social media. “Puberty is a crisis in itself. Then there is now isolation and the suppression of our culture – like shaking hands – “says Schneidinger. In addition, young people need a place in tourist resorts where the pressure of consuming is gone.

The youth work is financed by the community. According to GR Johannes Valentin, the “Chill” room is provided by the parish. “We want to create something sustainable. A second employee is already planned, ”says GR Markus Freund. GR Martina Kröll is enthusiastic about the offer, because the young people urgently need a contact point.
